In Rauschenberg's case, the use of President Kennedy's image was reflective of the idealism of that time, the optimism, etc. And when Kennedy was assassinated, his image also became emblematic of our loss, our resultant pessimism. But regardless of how the image can be interpreted, it stands as a potent symbol to us, even today.
